        Lightning - The Shocking Story

This site, from National Geographic Magazine, presents a simple overview of
the phenomenon of lightning. As Gentle Members would expect from this
organization, there are a number of stunning graphics featured in the
presentation.

"Lightning strikes somewhere on the surface of the earth about 100 times
every second. . . As you zap through our site, you'll hear electrifying
stories and learn some shocking facts about lightning." - from the website

The site explains how lightning works, the different types, Benjamin
Franklin's experiment and a map (of the U.S. only) displaying the
geographic frequency of lightning strikes. The "I Was Struck by Lightning"
section recounts survivor tales, while a photographer explains the lure of
seeking each unique shot. Gentle Members may wish to avoid the multimedia
segments unless they are on a broadband connection and have the most recent
versions of media software.
