Site of the Day for Thursday, June 27, 2002
The Bioluminescence Webpage
The List offers an enlightening website on the phenomena of marine
bioluminescence. Some gentle members may have experienced this glowing
light in a midnight ocean swim. For those who have not, this fascinating
site presents a remarkable display on the subject. Although parts of the
website are geared to the scientific community, the presentation of much of
the material makes it accessible to a wide audience.
"Reliable information on marine bioluminescence is widely scattered in the
literature and in unpublished data. A good web site can greatly accelerate
the spread of reliable new knowledge far beyond the rate attainable by
other means. Properly constructed and participated in, the bioluminescence
web site provides . . . a resource of reliable information." - from the
website
The award-winning site includes a section on common misconceptions, amazing
photos of luminous organisms and a particularly lucid explanation of the
chemistry of bioluminescence, complete with animated diagrams, among other
features.
