        Calendars Throughout the Ages

With the summer solstice almost upon those in the northern hemisphere, the
List offers an exemplary website on the evolution of calendars.
Comprehensive in scope, the site presents reams of information, not only on
the Julian calendar in use in the west but calendars used in other areas of
the world as well.

"Explore the fascinating history of the human endeavor to organize our
lives in accordance with the sun and the stars. . .This historical exhibit
is provided as a public service of the Institute for Dynamic Educational
Advancement (IDEA) by WebExhibits as a complement to www.time.gov. Texts
are adapted with permission from various sources. . ." - from the website

This may be the most thorough and well designed presentation of material on
types of calendars on the web. The site includes extensive information on
Islamic, Indian, Chinese, Jewish as well as Christian calendars currently
in use as well as ancient calendars of the Maya and Romans, among others.
With absorbing sections on the origins of the seven day week and a
timeline, the site may be worthy of a bookmark for many gentle members.

essential calendar at
