        Magna Carta - The British Library

Since this is June, the List is celebrating an unofficial Magna Carta Day.
If the List's gentle members are not able to visit the British Library in
person, a sojourn to the website may be the next best thing. Two of the
four extant exemplifications of the Great Charter are among the "Treasures"
of their collections

"Magna Carta established for the first time a very significant
constitutional principle, namely that the power of the king could be
limited by a written grant. . . `given by our hand in the meadow which is
called Runnymede between Windsor and Staines on the 15th day of June in the
17th year or our reign' (1215)" - from the website

The site contains background material, as well as a translation of the
Magna Carta. In addition, visitors may view a close-up of the entire
document with varying degrees of magnification.
