End of Europe's Middle Ages
The University of Calgary in Canada provides this heavyweight history
presentation on the close of the medieval period in Europe. Gentle Members
whose recollections of their studies in this area are somewhat hazy may
enjoy this as a stimulating refresher.
"The End of Europe's Middle Ages is designed to assist those students
engaged in Renaissance, Reformation and Early Modern studies who lack a
background in medieval European history. Intended to provide a brief
overview of the conditions at the end of Europe's Middle Ages, the tutorial
is presented in a series of chapters that summarize the economic,
political, religious and intellectual environment of the fourteenth and
fifteenth centuries. The main objective of the tutorial is to furnish a
baseline against which the vast changes of the following centuries may be
measured." - from the website
Although the site was designed for university undergraduates, it provides
excellent background and fascinating reading for the non-student. The
topics discussed include the economy and the Black Death, feudal
institutions, the Holy Roman Empire, the Ottoman Turks, Italy's
city-states, literature, intellectual life, visual arts and music. Helpful
maps and direct links to medieval source material underscore the site's
text presentation.
Unfortunately, the site was designed back in the heady days of lavish free
commercial offerings; the "Search Britannica" link is no longer functional.
However, most essential glossary and primary source links are of an
academic nature and have been unaffected.
