Site of the Day for Monday, July 1, 2002
Fortress Louisbourg
Since this is Canada Day, the List sends special greetings to all its
Canadian subscribers.
In honor of Canada Day, the List presents the Parks Canada website on
Fortress Louisbourg, one of Canada's premiere National Historic sites. This
single web page is but one of many at this site dealing with Louisbourg,
"the largest reconstructed 18th-century French fortified town in North
America" in the province of Nova Scotia.
"Spread over twelve acres along Cape Breton's rugged coastline, the
Fortress of Louisbourg is a spectacular historical reconstruction. This was
one of France's most important military and economic centres in North
America in the eighteenth century. Some fifty buildings and strong fortress
walls here look as they did when the French completed the original
structure in the 1740s. Cape Breton Island was known then as Ile Royale and
Louisbourg was its thriving capital." - from the main web page
The web page gives an historical overview of the town and fortress,
outlining the English French rivalry of the 18th century, its society and
culture as well as the background of its reconstruction. The "Home" link at
the bottom directs visitors to other relevant information about Louisbourg,
including a not to be missed virtual tour.
