Inventing Modern America: From the Microwave to the Mouse

Today's site, an exhibit based on a publication from the Lemelson-MIT
[Massachusetts Institute of Technology] Program, offers a look at some of the
inventors whose work improved lives and helped forge the structure of modern
life.
Gentle Subscribers will discover a fascinating glimpse into the world of a
selected
group of these pioneering thinkers.

"Inventing Modern America: From the Microwave to the Mouse celebrates the best
of
American ingenuity and inventiveness. In-depth profiles of ... inventors tell
the
often surprising stories of the creation of everyday objects, from Kevlar and
the
personal computer to the pacemaker. This site explores the life and work of
five of
these intriguing innovators." - from the website

Designed to showcase the featured inventors by focusing on some of their
outstanding characteristics, the exhibit offers biographical sketches, along
with
interview transcripts and video clips. From the know-how of Thomas Fogarty,
creator
of the surgical instrument, the balloon catheter, to the insight of Stephanie
Kwolek, inventor of Kevlar, these brief introductions capture the spirit of a
creative imagination harnessed to a scientific mind. In addition, the exhibit
includes two interesting games -- "Which (Discovery) Came First?" and "Invention
Connection".
