        Inside Cancer

Today's site, from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a science research
institute in New York state, offers a striking multimedia "guide to cancer
biology". Gentle Subscribers will find an excellent, wide-ranging resource
covering a broad spectrum of themes on this threatening disease.

"Cancer is a disease that affects all nationalities and age groups. ...
Despite the attention given to inherited cancer genes in the press, less
than 10% of all cancers are inherited." - from the website

The site features four modules under the categories of Hallmarks of Cancer;
Causes and Prevention; Diagnosis and Treatment; and Pathways to Cancer.
Delving into specific topics, such as the biological structure and workings
of normal and cancerous cells, the exhibit uses a highly graphical approach
to provide clear explanations. Animated graphs, videos and slides consider
a number of causal factors, rates of incidence of various cancer types and
discuss treatment strategies for the disease.
