Fire
Today's site, from Channel 4 Television in the U.K., offers a vivid look at
the Great Fire of London. Gentle Subscribers will discover a stirring
presentation on this ravaging conflagration which swept through the city,
and burned unrelentingly for five days.
"In September 1666, much of London vanished in the Great Fire. This website
tells the story of the fire -- and its legacy -- and shows how its
devastation spread." - from the website
The site begins with a narrative overview of the catastrophe, describing
the fire's origin, attempts to contain it, the spontaneous evacuation of
the area and a reckoning of the extent of the destruction. Additional
features include an "Ask the Experts" section, which discusses topics as
varied as the reasons for the remarkably low fatality numbers, the
financial impact of the fire and the possible connection of the fire and
the end of severe bubonic plague outbreaks; and a "Watch London Burn" flash
display. One of the highlights of the presentation is the "Chronology"
module, a riveting hour-by-hour description of events, with quotes from
those who lived through it.
