        Feeding 7+ Billion

Today's site, from the relentlessly optimistic folks at the Why Files, strikes
an
upbeat note with a report on the encouraging possibilities for increasing the
food
supply to feed an endlessly hungry planet. Gentle Subscribers will discover
some of
the proposed solutions which may make a significance difference in reducing the
recurring threat of famine.

"Can small solutions make a big difference? ... The green revolution fed
billions,
but population keeps rising, water is short and the climate is changing. How
will
Africans feed themselves despite poor soil and widespread poverty? Could small
projects that fit the environment and culture make farmers an engine of
prosperity
and a big source of food?" - from the website

This Why Files report, one of their abbreviated presentations, begins with a
daunting review of the challenges to be overcome in order to reach sustainable
food
production. A graphical display -- the interactive Global Hunger Index -- offers
statistics on child mortality, and the proportions of underweight and
undernourished populations in the developing world, from 1990 to 2011. Micro
loans
of cash and gain, wetland protection combined with payments for ecosystem
services,
and reforestation efforts with cash producing trees are highlighted by the
article
as some of the diverse projects achieving positive results in a number of
countries.
