The Paleontology Portal
Today's site offers an amazing exhibit from the University of California
Museum of Paleontology, which opens a vast window of exploration on the
paleontology underpinnings of the continental U.S. Gentle Subscribers will
discover a fascinating view of the geological ages and the flora and fauna
specific to each, in this impressively designed site.
"This site is a resource for anyone interested in paleontology, from the
professional in the lab to the interested amateur scouting for fossils to
the student in any classroom. We have gathered many different resources
into this single entry "portal" to paleontological information on the
Internet. ... Images and links that you see as you browse through the site
have been reviewed and selected for quality ..." - from the website
The main features of the site spotlight exploring time and space, inviting
a look at paleontology by time period and specific state; the fossil
gallery, with its superb collection of images searchable by taxon and time;
and the famous flora and fauna section, highlighting nine outstanding
locations, such as the well-known La Brea Tar Pits. The exhibit reveals
startling facts, such as the state of Maine being located in the tropics
during the Devonian period. In addition to the main sections, there are
ancillary modules on careers in paleontology, and resources for maps and
field guides.
