Hotkey Plus - Software of the Month
This month's software for the Windows platform takes full advantage of
those often overlooked keyboard keys -- the Windows Keys. With the
exception of laptop computers, which struggle with size limitations, most
standard keyboards since the late nineties have two, located in the lower
row. Many computer users ignore these but may be better served by enhancing
these keys' capabilities with this convenient utility by eponymous
programmer, "Brian Apps".
With HotKey Plus, the user can launch a variety of applications and files
with only a few keystokes. The miniscule download (36 kb zipped) is simply
unzipped to a user specified folder without any installation. Unlike some
utilities of this type, such as the venerable "WinKey", there are no fixed
settings, except those already integrated into the operating system. Even
though the application initially opens with a number of preset launches,
these may be removed with the program's delete button. The combination of
operator keys -- Windows, Control, Shift and Alternate -- allows the user
to set up a huge number of files and programs for easy access.
Configuring the program is remarkably easy. Select the "Browse" button,
after hitting "Add" in the main dialogue box and navigate to the required
program or file. Returning to the "Add" window, the user will find that the
"Command Line" and "Working Directory" lines have been magically filled in.
The only remaining task is to choose the launch key from the standard
alphabet, number, function (F) keys, or the numeric keypad, plus an
operator key. Additional features, such as using HotKey Plus to open
drives, invoke a screensaver or resize Windows to specified parameters, are
also included.
This little program, nibbling a mere fragment of RAM, has been designed for
ease of use and and for the ultimate convenience of its end user, making it
an extremely worthwhile addition to anyone's arsenal of handy utilities.
