        Ecological Footprint Quiz

Gentle Subscribers may recall that during their school days, Fridays were
often test days. Following that tradition, today's site, from the Earth Day
Network, invites visitors to take a little online quiz, for which no
advance preparation is required, to determine how much of the planet's
resources they consume.

"Ever wondered how much "nature" your lifestyle requires? You're about to
find out. ... This Ecological Footprint Quiz estimates how much productive
land and water you need to support what you use and what you discard. After
answering 15 easy questions you'll be able to compare your Ecological
Footprint to what other people use and to what is available on this planet.
... Caution: this quiz may surprise you, shock you, or make you think.
Please remain calm...but not too calm!!" - from the website

The quiz is available in six languages and for citizens of more than sixty
countries. By zeroing in on such things as housing, diet and
transportation, it presents its results comparing an individual's
"ecological footprint" to the average in their country. Its final
conclusion startlingly illustrates the number of "earths" required to
sustain each respondent's consumption, if everyone on the planet lived that
way. For those who require a more precise calculator, a full Excel
spreadsheet version is available for download, while additional information
is provided on the methodology behind the quiz. The excellent FAQ section
brims with details about the ecological implications of lifestyle choices.
At the conclusion of the quiz, the "What You Can Do" section offers down to
earth advice about how to live more lightly on the planet.
