Farmers, Warriors, Builders: The Hidden Life of Ants

Today's site, from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, offers an
exhibit devoted to the sometimes mysterious society of ants. Gentle Subscribers
will discover an engaging presentation designed to be interesting as well as
instructive.

"Ants dominate the small-scale world. We may seldom notice them, but ants
affect
their ecosystems as much as humans do. And much like us, ants achieve
domination by
being social creatures. They must cooperate with each other to meet their basic
needs for food, shelter, and defense. How they do this can look both strikingly
familiar and bizarre. ... Get a look at life from an ant's point of view ... " -
from the website

Through the use of large format photography and scientific investigation, the
exhibit details some of the fascinating aspects of daily life in an ant colony.
With remarkable photos capturing ant life, the image galleries are divided into
Food, Warriors, Shelter and Communication. Each photo is accompanied by
informative
notes explaining the significance of the pictures in ant society. Showcased as
well
are a series of QuickTime ant videos, highlighting colonies such as army ants
and
the weaver ants of Cambodia. Additional links offer further resources on this
singular insect.
