Site of the Day for Monday, January 28, 2008

FDA Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts

Today's site, from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, provides a
convenient reference for consumers on products which have provoked public
service announcements because of serious safety concerns. American Gentle
Subscribers may want to bookmark the site and/or sign up for e-mail alerts
for product recalls.

"Recalls, Withdrawals and Alerts in the Last 60 Days: This page includes
the most significant product actions of the last 60 days, based on the
extent of distribution and the degree of health risk. The recalls on the
list are mainly Class I. ... Class I recall: a situation in which there is
a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product
will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." - from the
website

The site presents safety notifications on products as diverse as
contaminated syringes to a possible botulism risk from a particular brand
of widely distributed beans. The list of items which have triggered safety
concerns is both browsable and searchable, while the opening page includes
products from early November to the current date. Noting that product
"recalls are almost always voluntary", additional information for the
vigilant consumer, on how the recall process works is available from the
"FDA 101" link.
