Site of the Day for Tuesday, July 31, 2007 DVD Flick 1.2.1.4 - Software of the Month For those with a pile of video files sitting on the back burner and fully intending to transform that footage of Junior happily wearing his birthday cake into something watchable on a stand alone DVD player, this month's freeware for the Windows platform may be just what they need. DVD Flick by programmer Dennis Meuwissen is a nicely configured, reasonably reliable foray into the sometimes tricky land of video format conversion. The current release of June 2007, is a Sourceforge project and incorporates a number of essential ancillary applications under its umbrella. Handling a broad range of formats, from the widely used .avi to the unpopular but still frequently seen .mkv or Matroska files -- named after those little Russian nesting dolls -- DVD Flick will handle a video project from start to finish, including burning to DVD with the integrated program Imgburn. Consulting the help file or HTML "Guide" as it is termed, is indispensable for novices to video conversion projects. The Guide features a walk-through for creating a simple DVD with images of dialogue windows and standard recommendations about what to fill in the boxes. For those requiring a bit more hand-holding, detailed tutorials for this program are available elsewhere, at sites such as Videohelp.com. After wrestling with the settings, users can move on to the encoding process, which requires lots of free hard drive space and as fast a processor as possible but is basically an automated routine. Users are advised to allow the computer to chunter away overnight to complete the encoding and burn the DVD to disc. Those who may be reluctant to give a video conversion project a shot, might keep in mind that the price of turning out a "coaster" has plummeted dramatically over the past few years so a failed attempt usually costs the princely sum of two-bits. The triumph of creating a DVD, viewable on a stand alone player, is generally worth a few hiccups and quarters along the way.
