Browzar: Software of the Month
Concerns about online privacy have been rising over the years, especially
when coupled with the increase of public facilities for web access. This
month's software, a free application from a commercial firm, attempts to
address this issue. Currently for use on the Windows platform, the company
plans future development of Browzar for Linux and the Macintosh systems.
Browzar 1.2 is a small Internet Explorer shell program, which can be used
with any version of that browser higher than 5.5. Featuring a handy
built-in popup blocker, which can be turned off, its main attribute is its
ability to clean up after itself. It does not use an auto-complete
function, or save a history of sites visited, or a cache of those sites.
These files are automatically deleted at the end of each session. While it
does accept cookies, essential for the functionality of some sites, such as
Internet banking facilities, these cookies are vaporized at each session's
close. Should a crash occur so that Browzar was not properly exited, it
will do a discreet little check upon restart and remove any leftovers from
the previously interrupted session.
Browzar can be run from a memory stick, making it convenient for use on any
computer. Alternatively, with a download size of 264Kb, and no installation
requirements, it can be quickly accessed from any public computer, on a
download, click and go basis. Removal is as simple as deleting the
program's icon.
With a clean, streamlined interface, available in telephone black or
battleship grey, the application is a simple browser more suitable for text
and straightforward images than streaming video or other razzmatazz website
attractions. Browzar uses a standard unalterable homepage search engine
powered by ask.com, although it is an easy measure to wing along to
alternative search sites.
For those concerned about privacy issues and prepared to trade off some
conveniences such as tabbed browsing for the security of a reliable
elimination of personal information, Browzar may be a useful program.
