Site of the Day for Friday, August 30, 2002 Close All -- Software of the Month The List is always chuffed to unearth tiny programs which compensate for the annoying deficiencies of an operating system. Under the heading of "Things Which Should Have Been Included in Windows But Weren't" is a convenient utility to close and optionally save either running programs or open files or both. If gentle members routinely take advantage of the generous amount of RAM on their systems by running a number of programs simultaneously and a concomitant number of open files, closing all of these individually is an exercise in tedium. The answer to this bit of bother is the modest utility "Close All". At 33 Kb zipped and 63 Kb in executable size, this teeny but handy program's resource use appears to be about 150 Kb. It sits tidily in the system tray as a little "X" icon and with a single click every program and open window are shut down. "Close All" will thoughtfully inquire if you want your data saved. (Your last four hours of work were absolute rubbish and you never want to see it again -- click "No".) Additionally, the 'Add Task' menu option will allow you to shut down programs which run in the system tray and you can exclude applications which you don't want to be closed from the Close All's 'Shut Down' menu.
