        The Science of Baseball

From those lively folks at the "Why Files" comes this engaging presentation
on the American sport of baseball. Even Gentle Subscribers who are not
devoted fans of the game may enjoy this science-driven yet breezy site.

"The bigwigs have chucked the first balls of the baseball season, and we
trust the umpires declared each such rusty throw a strike. Seriously,
baseball season is upon us, and that's got us Why Filers thinking about
neat stuff. What's different about baseball in Colorado? (Hint: It's not
that Rocky Mountain water). Why do balls curve in the air? And what happens
when baseball players tuck those disgusting wads of tobacco into their
cheeks? Baseball. It may be the American pastime. But that won't prevent us
from exploiting it to talk science and math." - from the website

One of the great features of this presentation is a simple java applet
which allows input of one of seven major league home cities, specified by
altitude, the speed and angle of the hit ball, with the resultant
calculation of how far the ball will travel, which will answer the "what's
different about Colorado baseball?" query. Additional sections explore the
mysteries of the curve ball, weather prediction and baseball and a
frightening look at the long tradition of chewing tobacco and baseball.
