Site of the Day for Monday, July 23, 2007

        AIRNow

Today's site, a cooperative initiative of a number of governmental
agencies, provides Air Quality Index reports nationwide and includes some
Canadian locales as well. Gentle Subscribers will find authoritative
information on changing air pollution conditions and the possible health
consequences for sensitive groups.

"The Web site offers daily AQI forecasts as well as real-time AQI
conditions for over 300 cities across the US, and provides links to more
detailed State and local air quality Web sites. .... Ground-level ozone and
airborne particles are the two pollutants that pose the greatest threat to
human health in this country." - from the website

The site provides a detailed explanation of the Air Quality Index, and how
the quantity of different pollutants in the air and respiratory sensitivity
in the general public, result in various levels of warning advisory
notices. Focusing on specific pollutants targeted in the Clean Air Act:
ground-level ozone, particle pollution, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide,
and nitrogen dioxide, the forecasts place a special emphasis on ozone and
particulate pollution. Maps displaying areas of serious ozone concern are
updated hourly. Information is also available on what cities have currently
called an "action day" because of pollution levels, with a map displaying
the affected urban areas.
