        2008 List of Banished Words

Today's site, from Lake Superior State University, presents the annual
publication of that happy list of deplorable words which ought to be banned
from use. Sensitive-eared Subscribers, who have manfully endured the
irritating words and phrases which appear on the list, may now hope they
will pale into disuse.

"[T]he annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-Use,
Over-Use and General Uselessness has been going strong since New Year's Day
1976 and shows no signs of stopping. People from around the world have
nominated hundreds of words and phrases such as "you know," "user
friendly," "at this point in time," and "have a nice day," to be purged
from the language. ... This year, in a gesture of humanitarian relief, the
committee restores "truthiness," banned on last year's list, to formal use.
This comes after comedians and late-night hosts were thrown under the bus
and rendered speechless by a nationwide professional writers' strike. The
silence is deafening." - from the website

The offers not only the straightforward words and phrases of the 2008 List
but the fulminating and often anguished notations of those traumatized by
these unspeakable words. Among the the top ten offenders are "perfect
storm", "organic" and the entirely predictable "surge". Additional features
of the site include access to the complete collection of lists, as well as
posters and a section to submit amusing and erudite comments on the current
list.

singled out for inclusion in the list at:.
