Site of the Day for Monday, March 2, 2009 11 Most Endangered Places Today's site, from the U.S. National Trust for Historic Preservation, presents its current list for those properties which are in serious jeopardy. Gentle Subscribers will find a wealth of information about places across the nation whose existence is under threat. "Since 1988, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has used its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places as a powerful alarm to raise awareness of the serious threats facing the nation's greatest treasures. It has become one of the most effective tools in the fight to save the country's irreplaceable architectural, cultural and natural heritage. The list, which has identified 200 sites through 2008, has been so successful in galvanizing preservation efforts across the country and rallying resources to save one-of-a-kind landmarks that, in just two decades, only six sites have been lost." - from the website The site features information about the current places which are on the hot list, including the entire state of California's park system, along with such diverse places as the "Boyd Theatre" in Philadelphia and the enormously significant Sumner Elementary School in Topeka, Kansas. Each separate item on the endangered list is showcased with photos, financial details, historical background and the measures being taken to preserve the property. In addition, there's a helpful action plan for each place to promote civic attention to the endangered property and to encourage the participation of local residents, as well as any relevant updates.
