> HA NOI - The Tran Phu Secondary School in Da Nang City has successfully
implemented the inclusive education model for visually impaired students.
>
> The model, introduced in the semi-public Tran Phu Secondary School six
years ago, combined classes for visually challenged children and other
regular students.
>
> At present, the school has seven visually impaired students who are
studying in 10, 11 and 12 grades. In these classes, students with
disabilities are made to sit in the front row, next to regular students who
perform well. They also use Braille typewriters for taking notes. "The
regular students help their classmates with disabilities in studies and
homework," a teacher said.
>
> Initially, the teachers were sceptical if the model would work, said
Nguyen Huu Xa, Principal of the school, when they admitted four students
from the Nguyen Dinh Chieu School, a primary and junior secondary school for
the visually challenged.
>
> "We were worried about this inclusive education classes for students with
disabilities. We had to change the teaching system, shifting to a slower
method that focused on basics," he said. The teachers also spend extra hours
with these students at home to improve their grasp of subjects.
>
> When the examination results finally came, their efforts had paid off with
the visually challenged children performing as well as regular students.
While 10 grade student Dau Thi Giang scored 9 out of 10 in biology, Nguyen
Van Ty of grade 11 scored 8.5 and his classmate of Hoang Thi Gai scored 7.5
in history.
>
> Giang, 19, from the central Quang Binh Province, was born blind. She was
studying at the Nguyen Dinh Chieu School till 1995 before moving to Tran Phu
School last year. In her first term in grade 10 standard, she topped the
class with an average of 7.8. "The most difficult subject was geometry,
since I cannot see figures. I managed to overcome my handicap by studying
hard and using special equipment," Giang said.
>
> Yet another blind student, Truong Thi Bich Diem, from the central Quang
Nam Province, in class 12 scored 9 in English language and was top in her
class. She is now preparing for the entrance exam to join HCM City
Conservatory next year.
>
> According to the principal, these students have shown exceptional will to
study hard and look forward to higher studies in the future. The school,
however, has a shortage of Braille textbooks and other equipment of study
for these children.
>
> "We are short of studying equipment for these children. Many students here
hope to pursue higher education when they finish junior secondary
education," the principal said.
>
> According to unofficial statistics, there are approximately 70,000
Vietnamese children with disabilities taking part in these inclusive
education programmes. - VNS
