Barredo: Para Games a big success

Friday, December 30, 2005 - FOR achieving its main objectives, the recent Third Asean Para Games that Manila hosted was declared a smashing success.

Philippine Asean Para Games Organizing Committee (Papgoc) chairman Michael Barredo announced the happy news Thursday as he expressed delight over the outcome of the sportsfest held last December 14 to 21.

"We have achieved all our objectives and these are to promote regional solidarity and tradition, create awareness for nations to take cognizance of the needs of their disabled in so far as their mental, physical and spiritual strength is concerned, and most importantly provide an avenue for the region's differently-abled persons to become productive citizens,'' said Barredo.

Barredo, also the Board of Governors Chairman of the Asean Para Sports Federation and President of the 113-nation member International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA), lauded the Filipino athletes for delivering the best medal output for the country since the meet's inception in 2000.

"The performance of our athletes only proved that we have the potential and given sufficient support, adequate equipment, exposure and training, our differently-abled athletes can excel and bring honor for flag and country in the international sporting arena," he said.

Barredo thanked President Arroyo, who through Executive Order No. 275 called for the support and cooperation of various government agencies to ensure the success of the undertaking hosted by the Philippines for the first time under the auspices of the Papgoc.

The Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes office and Department of Public Works and Highways sponsored the event, with support from various government agencies, the City Government of Manila, and the private sector.

Spearheaded by 5-gold medal winner Sander Severino of chess, Team Philippines grabbed a total of 22 gold medals in the biennial meet, a far cry from its two-gold output in the Vietnam Asean Para Games in 2003.

Other outstanding performers who won the gold were Isidro Vildisola, Jerico Opena, Marites Burce, Cheryl Canta, Maria Afrecita Salazar, Michael Morales and Delmer Tawatao of athletics, Josephine Medina and Minnie Ramos of table tennis, Henry Lopez, Alexis Elinon, Francis Ching, Oliver Elmar and Rudy Sarmiento of chess, swimming's Daniel Damaso and Arnel Aba, and Sydney Paralympic Games bronze medalist Adeline Dumapong, who shattered her own Asean record in powerlifting.

Barredo added that the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP) has now set its sights on the country's first-ever gold medal in the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.

Over 1,000 of the best differently-abled athletes from all over Southeast Asia showcased their athletic prowess in the Games, which featured athletics, swimming, powerlifting, badminton, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, goalball, chess, wheelchair tennis, and judo, while demonstration sports included sailing, boccia, tenpin bowling and fencing.
