I use to launch:
+ make mrproper (optional, it will completely clean the tree)
+ make menuconfig
+ make
+ make modules_install

With 2.6 kernels the "make" command will do everything for your running
platform (except the modules_install), on powerpc the default is to
build an uncompressed image.
