Thanks for the prompt reply. from the installer cd iso, yes you do get some text come on screen, commonly on the latter G5's you get a boot to open firmware with elf32 the last line before the total freeze up says


release stuck keys ..

The above error will always happen with a 32bit installer kernel on these newer G5 based apple pc's
