didn't know that!
i thought i was using vim
but ':display normal' solved my problem ..so it might be elvis
and
vim somethang.html
brings out what i wanted as default
would there be any trouble if i
ln vim vi?

Are you using elvis (Slackware standard VI) or vim?
elvis does (per default) switch into HTML mode for .html.
You can switch into the normal mode using ':display normal'
