Steph,

The best thing to do is create the dynamic and the expression in one item.

From scratch, do the following:

Navigate to the note that you want the marking below.

Press Ctrl+E

When the text field opens press Ctrl+P to create the piano mark then press
space and type cres.

One important point to stress is that Ctrl+P creates the p in a different
font which is correct for dynamics. The cres is just written in a basic font
(usually Times New Roman).

The reason for doing it this way is that the dynamic and the expression will
always be spaced correctly.

At the beginning of the score, I have a p marking followed by a cress
marking. The p overlays the p marking.
