Actually, it isn't. All you have to do is explain that this is a process under which you can still read file names as they should be read while reading documents without hearing every period and coma spoken. You don't have to do anything other than change your verbosity level if Eloquence is your default voice synth. However, if you wish to use the solo direct voices, you have to do this dance. That understood, Sibelius has nothing to do with it. Again, if you wish to put it up, go ahead. I'm probably going to leave the JFW list again because there's simply too much traffic. Want to use SAPI voices with Sib Access Dave and all, The key is to develop a new profile with the solo direct voices that work with JAWS 10 and forward. You then have to make two modifications, one that applies to Wordpad and Sibelius, and the other that applies to the Internet Explorer.JCF file. We'll begin by modifying the Wordpad and Sibelius JCF files because you will be working with the default file for these. Do the following: 1. In either Wordpad or Sibelius, Press JAWS J and then arrow to open the Voices, Global Adjustment dialog. 2. Make sure that modify default is checked. 3. You will be making a new custom file which will become your default file. Tab to where it says save as and type in a new name. 4. Tab to the voice selection option and choose one of the solo direct voices of your choice. SAPI voices don't seem to respond to what you're going to do next reliably enough to use them. 5. Tab to the punctuation box and choose none. 6. Tab to the okay and press space. You have now left the dialog. 7. Press JAWS 6 to open the configuration manager for either Sibelius or Wordpad, depending which application you are in at the moment and do the following. 8. Press Alt s and arrow to customize punctuation 9. Down arrow and make sure that the punctuation marks you do not wish to hear, and I stress do not wish to hear, are set to all. Remember ht you set your default punctuation to none in the voices global dialog where you chose modify application. 10. If you set the coma and period to all when you've set the application's punctuation read to none, you will get none. For the Internet Explorer.JCF file, you want periods to be read so that a file with a version number containing a period before the .exe does not cause JAWS to read the file as a calendar date. To do this: 1. In any subfolder on your computer, Press JAWS J and open the voices global adjustment dialog. 2. Select the second radio button, Modify Application Internet Explorer. 3. Tab and select the direct solo voice you wish. 4. Tab and set punctuation to all. 5. Tab to okay and you're done. The key is not to read any long documents in an application where punctuation hasn't been suppressed. Curiously, you don't have nearly as much of a hassle if you simply use the Eloquence default synth. You only have to do this nonsense if you're using the new direct solo voices. Since I have three computers, It's necessary for me to use different voices on at least two of them so I know which machine is talking to me at any one time. Want to use SAPI voices with Sib Access Hi Kevin, Sorry, I didn't do a very good job of explaining this. When you choose the level for an individual symbol it will be spoken at that level and all levels above it. So, setting period to All means that the period will only be spoken when you set the punctuation level to all. Setting period to most, it will be spoken when the punctuation level is most or all. Setting the period to none means that periods will be spoken when the punctuation level is none, some, most or all. If you don't want to hear a particular symbol you should set it to most, some or none and then set the punctuation level to a level which is higher than the level for the symbol. Want to use SAPI voices with Sib Access Dan, You said that if I chose All in the radio buttons, than only characters that had been set to all in the list would be spoken. Unfortunately, near as I can figure out, the relationship between the radio buttons and the characters is such that whatever you choose in the list is assigned to that radio button and there's no way to, for example, set period to most and then set the radio button to all so that the period isn't spoken. What I can seem to do is set the preferences I want using the JAWS v command on a one time basis. But when I Alt Tab out and back, the settings I made for punctuation are lost. Remember that this applies only to the SAPI voices. I don't have any of these problems with the eloquence default profile. sorry to bother you with this. Left a message on the JAWS list but haven't seen any replies. Thanks, Kevin -----Original Message----- From: sib-access-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:sib-access-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Dan Rugman Sent: Sunday, March 15, 2009 5:01 PM To: sib-access@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [sib-access] Re: Slightly O.T. Want to use SAPI voices with Sib Access Kevin, You can set the verbosity levels for each application separately through the configuration manager. Make sure that you're in the application you want to set the verbosity for and then press JAWS+6. The configuration manager will open with the JCF file for that app loaded. Pressing Alt+S brings up a menu which contains all the dialogs which you can use to configure the verbosity. Customize Punctuation lets you specify how each punctuation character will be spoken at the different punctuation levels. It contains a list view of all the punctuation characters. Pressing space on each item will make it cycle through four options: all, most, some and none. After the list is a group of four radio buttons. These correspond to the same options in the list of characters. If you choose all in the radio buttons, then only characters which have been set to all in the list will be spoken. Likewise for most, some and none. Want to use SAPI voices with Sib Access Dear All, I have JAWS 10 on my system with Sib Access. I would like to use the SAPI voices with Sib Access instead of Eloquence even though I've been told that the SAPI voices are much slower and are best used when reading long documents. I just like the sound. Not only that, I have multiple computers and I would benefit from having different voices for each so I know which one is speaking to me at any given time. The problem is that I can't arrive at a workable compromise that gives me the right level of spoken punctuation. If I have punctuation set to all, that will make JAWS read the names of files located in folders with periods in their names before the .3, such as exe files with detailed version numbers, correctly. However, If I do that, I hear much too much punctuation when I'm in apps like Sibelius and Sonar. However, if I minimize the punctuation to an appropriate level for Sibelius, file names of the sort I just described are read as having dates in the body of their title when read by JAWS in Windows Explorer. For someone who has used JAWS as long as I have, I'm simply not as accomplished as I should be. A little vision is a dangerous thing. Is their a solution that will give me the punctuation compromise I want? I seem to get what I want when I'm in the default voice with Eloquence.
