Tom -
You're missing the part where he's using the logic channels on an MSO scope,
so all it cares about is High or Low. He's obviously not trying to look at
risetimes, just raw edge timing. In any case, all of the timing information
lives in the fundamental frequency, so even if it was analog acquisition
rather than digital, he could still get all the timing information at 500
MSa/s.
