Then, you may want to check some system or data transmission books if you
want to know the details.  For example, Transmission systems for
communications by Bell Lab (chapter 30). Or one of the original papers
"Bipolar repeater for pulse code modulation signals" by J.S.Mayo, Bell
System Tech., J., vol.41 (Jan. 1962), pp.25-47.
