My favorite free tool for this kind of work is Scilab, which is a
Matlab knockoff done by a university in France. It's a great tool --
besides the Scilab language & shell itself, the package includes a
development environment, easy facilities for graphing, and a signal
processing toolkit called Scicos.
I like it better than Matlab 'cause it runs on both Linux and Windoze,
and it's free -- you never run into the problem of finding that you
need to shell out another $500 just to get the toolbox you forgot to
order the first time around . . . .
