Sadly, this is more common than most of us would like to 
believe.  It has happened to me more than once.  If it happens 
early in your career it is easier to recover from it.  If it 
happens later, it can set you back several years, and can 
permanently close career paths.

I think the worst case is to apply for a job in some advanced 
kind of development, in which you have great skill, then be 
placed in a boring position nearby where you get to see others, 
not as good as you, doing the job you want.  Meanwhile, your 
job is just close enough to be contaminated by the 
"intellectual property".

Sometimes it is necessary to turn down an apparently good offer, 
even if it means unemployment.
