First, as far as I know there aren't any standard curricula
requirements....yet.  SI is still in it's infancy. What I look for in a new
hire is an academic background (or job experience)in electromagnetics, and
some familiarity with any of the standard software packages such as XTK,
ICX, HyperLynx, Spectraquest, et. al.  I am more concerned with the
candidate's basic understanding of electromagnetic theory than their
familiarity with simulation packages however.  Anyone can learn to use the
software, it's just a tool(not to down play its fundamental importance in
our industry...we would still be starting fires with flint stones without
it).  I want someone who can solve problems that are not necessarily in the
textbooks yet, someone that can think out of the box, someone that can
handle new and unique situations. Being in research requires this type of
emphasis.
Other companies will have different requirements.  Some may need a person
who is expert in the use of the above mentioned software, someone who is
very fast and efficient and can handle multiple projects at the same time
and make it look easy.  Some need personnel that are centered on chip
design, some need personnel that are focused on board layout, and some need
both.  The list is long.  SI ranges across many disciplines, from materials
to hardware and software design.
If I were going to pick one academic specialization to secure a future in SI
as it exists today and as it will exist over the next 10 years, it would be
an advanced degree in computational electromagnetics.  Do that and you can
write your own ticket.
