I wonder how Faraday and Maxwell would have reacted. Old times or new times, I guess there is a consistent relation between problem complexity and tool availability (incl computers). Major difference I see is that thinking is shifting from integral form to differential form. One reason supporting this trend is to harness the ever increasing computer power and the other is it is not easy to put together stuff like Maxwell did. When the current trend runs out of juice, may be those new SI kids down the road start walking the opposite direction. Happy New Year! Ya know, they just don't make engineers like the used to. Now when I was a young man, I had to perform SI while walking barefoot over broken glass, up hill in both directions in chest deep snow with shorts and no shirt on, scratching maxwells equations onto stone tablets with a stick, making 25 cents an hour. These new SI kids just have it too easy..... Obligatory 8-) ;-) best regards, Michael Greim -----Original Message----- From: Douglas C. Back in my Bell Labs days, engineers were "Members of Technical Staff" and any MTS, in most parts of the Labs, were considered able to take on any job whether it be analog or digital design, EMC, SI, anything. MTS were expected to learn anything necessary for a new assignment, and we did! On the other hand, we had almost limitless resources (by comparison to today's work environment) at our disposal.
