This is an interesting thread.  My two cents' worth:

* The "return path" through nearby traces is the underlying cause of
crosstalk.
* The limitation with fluid (and other) analogies is that it is hard to
visualize crosstalk as part of the return path, since there is no physical
connection between the coupled traces.  In fact, the coupling works
perfectly well in air or a vacuum.  Given that, there are still times when a
fluidic model is convenient for visualization.
* The signal travels faster than the average electron drift speed or even an
individual electron's RMS speed, courtesy of Maxwell.
* And I agree, many engineers forget Maxwell's equations unless they use
them frequently.  (Although I freely admit I still look them up when I need
them.)
