[SI-LIST] Regarding si-list usage....

si-list:

Without getting into specifics, I just wanted to request that all
concerned please refrain from starting what appears to be a flame-war
looming
on the horizon.

This issue raises it's head periodically, so it looks like it is time for a
few words regarding the message traffic that has passed through the
reflector
in the past day or so.

It appears that it all started with a software vendor extolling the virtues
of his product and a headhunter trolling for clients. These two postings
elicited both some on-list and off-list comments about the
appropriateness of
such postings. This in turn was followed up with an on-list
posting disagreeing with a previous one. Based on previous incidents I
can see
this spiraling out of control. Therefore I thought a few comments from the
list management might be in order.

First, list policy has always discouraged vendors (hardware or software)
from posting what may be perceived as self serving advertising. This has
applied to all vendors be they mom/pop operations in the attic or
Fortune 500
companies.

Second, headhunters have been (and currently are) discouraged from
trolling
the list for clients. I understand that many have experienced hardships in
employment as a result of the economy and may welcome being pinged by a
headhunter, but on the flip side there are many more list subscribers
who are
annoyed by such intrusions and detest such messages. Job postings ARE
allowed
by hiring managers, and working engineers looking to augment their staffs,
however posts even by those categories of individuals that come across as
display ads out of the Sunday want-ads are discouraged.

Thirdly, and perhaps most disturbing, are messages that make personal
verbal
attacks on fellow list members. If you feel strongly enough about a topic
that you feel it warrants such a response, please do it offline and not on
the list.

Enough said. Time to retire the proverbial wet-noodle until it is needed
again. Thanks to all who choose to participate in the list technical
discussions. Please try to keep the discussions on a professional level.

Thanks!
