Hi Chris
Basically for each frequency of your sinusoidal injected jitter, you =
increase the amplitude of your injected sinusoidal jitter until you find =
the pass/fail transition. The values can be in absolute injected jitter =
(e.g. picoseconds) or in UI (unit intervals) values which you can =
convert to timing by multiplying the UI values by the data rate period.
Typically you are either able to do a function test at each (injected =
jitter frequency, injected jitter amplitude point) to see if you have a =
pass or a fail (i.e. your CDR is able to find a correct strobing =
position) (by using a Bit Error Rate Tester or an ATE system) or your =
device might have some internal DFT to provide you that information if =
you are testing it using some type of parametric loopback approach (I =
can send you a paper on this type of approach if you are interested).

Subject: [SI-LIST] Receiver Jitter Testing
Hey Gang,
It has been a while since I have been active on the list, but I'm =
looking=20
for some information on measuring jitter and I'm hoping that you can =
help=20
me out.
I have seen a metric where injected periodic jitter is graphed on the=20
x-axis of a graph with the y-axis being "Jitter[UI]". The x-axis is the =
sweep of periodic sinusoidal jitter, but in terms of receiver jitter=20
sensitivity, what is "Jitter[UI]"?=20
Since it is on the y-axis of the graph, it must be something that we can =
turn up until we indicate a failure in our system.
Thanks,
Chris
