Sindey,
1. An unbuffered DIMM does not have a buffer for the ADDRESS ( A0-A13) bits
as it goes from memory controller to DIMM chips. Also it does not have the
PLL for CK and CK#.
2. An Registered DIMM hase a register for the ADDRESS ( A0-A13) bits as it
goes from memory controller to DIMM chips. Also also has PLL for CK and
CK#. The PLL then distribute the CLOCK individually to each DDR SDRAM chip.
This enhances the signal integrity of the differential CLOCK and the Address
Pins.
3. A buffered device is used on old EDO or Fast Page Module. A register is
used on SDRAM modules. So you will not find the term "buffred" DIMM often
now a days. Instead you will find terms "unbuffered" and "registered".
Buffers and Registers drive or amplify signals as they enter memory module.
4. Registered Modules are costlier than unbuffred modules on account of two
facts - first, they are low in demand , second they used additional buffer
and PLL chips.
5. Owing to better signal integrity of the Registered modules they are
expected to have better margins. They are used in servers and critical
systems. Unbuffered DIMMs are used in mostly in Desktops. Although there is
no rule that it can not be used on servers and workstations - the actual
decision will be based upon how critical is the question of prevention of
data.

Hello,
Could anybody provide more info on unbuffered , buffered, registered
DIMM's?? What are the differences and advantages and disadvantages of each?
Thanks,
Sidney
