[SI-LIST] Re: PC Parallel port to 3V3

Ian,

I have used Fairchild's 74LVXZ161284 to interface between a p.c.'s
parallel port and an
FPGA's 3.3V I/O. The device is a bidirectional translating transceiver
that has 5V tolerant
inputs as well as separate vcc_cable supply pins that allow the outputs on
the cable side
to be driven by a higher supply voltage.

The 74LVXZ161284 also has a power-up protection feature and internal
termination for the cable:

There is also a 74LVX161284 "no Z" that is essentially the same device
without the power-up
protection feature:

Sincerely,
Chris

Hello Ian,

I've used the following buffer IC from TI for parallel port interface
applications:
74LVC16245A

It handles two banks of 8-bits, can drive or receive on either bank
(bi-directional)
and operates at 1.8V to 3.3V. Its inputs are also 5V compliant, which
makes
it nice
for interfacing with the parallel port.

You'll need to verify whether the number of pins are sufficient for your
DSP
(probably
so is my guess.)

Regards,
Drew

Subject: [SI-LIST] PC Parallel port to 3V3

Hello everyone,

I would like to interface a microprocessor bus running from 3.3V to a PC
parallel port. The parallel port outputs on my PC seems to be more-or-less
5V levels. I haven't tried putting a voltage source in and reading the
port,
but as there are bound to be lots of different implementations of the
port,
I wouldn't want to assume that mine is representative. Has anyone tried to
do this in an application? (successfully or otherwise...) What kind of
buffering did you use?

The bus in question is actually the HPI of a Texas Instruments 55x DSP, in
case anyone's interested.

Thanks in advance,

Ian.
