Si-Listers-
As most subscribers to si-list are aware, a number of published
papers on
SI topics as well as assorted documents on SI related topics have been
available
for quite some time on the web pages of the si-list remote archives
hosted by
yahoogroups.com.
As of a couple months ago, the sysops at yahoo.com modified the
requirements
for accessing files stored on their site to include the necessity of
registering with
yahoogroups and obtaining a username and password. This was all done in the
name of system security. While a noble goal, it has turned out to be a
royal pain
for users in my opinion.
To circumvent this problem or annoyance, si-list now has it's own
website for
storage of SI related items. It may be accessed at: http://www.si-list.org
I've noted that many technically related web sites require users to
register to
access their 'free' information. I suppose most 'for-profit' companies
do that
for marketing purposes. The si-list repository really will have 'free'
access for
users. No need to register. Just go to the site, click to the desired
documents and
download.
The site is presently under construction. Most, but not all of the
content has been
copied from the yahoogroups site to the new pages. The published papers
have been
transferred, the other assorted SI docs will follow shortly. Presently,
the pages are
functional, but not very pretty. As I get some time to expend on the
project I'll improve
the aesthetics.
If any list member has SI related material they would care to make
available to the
general SI list membership, contact me and I can take the steps
necessary to upload the
material to the website. If there are desired enhancements to the site
that would improve
it's usefulness to the SI list community, please let me know your ideas.
(a point of trivia: www.si-list.org is hosted in a data center in New
Orleans previously
owned by Enron Broadband. When Enron went belly-up and was forced to
sell off its
assets, the fully equipped, state of the art data center was acquired by
a small ISP who now
provides webspace to 3rd party users.)
