Hello,
*Please note that the April meeting takes place on a Monday night, and not
on the usual Tuesday night.*
Please join us for the monthly meeting of the Santa Clara Valley chapter of
the EMC Society, on this coming Monday evening. Detailed schedule and
directions are provided below.
*Distinguished Lecturer* of the IEEE-EMC Society, Dr. Heyno Garbe, will be
speaking about the EMC aspects of LANs and how to avoid the problems
associated with them. An abstract of Dr. Garbe's talk along with his bio
are provided below.
The meeting will start at 5:30 with a social followed by the presentation by
Dr. Heyno Garbe at 7:00 pm. Food and beverages are provided.
Kind Regards,

*IEEE/EMC Society Meeting*
*Monday* April 3, 2006
*Time: Social 5:30 p.m. Presentation 7:00 p.m. *

*Place: Applied Materials Bowers Cafeteria*
*3090 Bowers Ave.**, Santa Clara, CA 95051-0804***

*Subject: Understanding and Avoiding EMC-Problems of LANs*
* *
*Speaker: Dr. Heyno Garbe; Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE-EMCS*
* *
*Abstract: *The increasing use of high-speed data transmission causes a lot
of discussion about the real or mystic interference from these new systems.
Some people claim a lot of problems by talking about Power Line
Communication (PLC) for example. Other people dealing with ISD, DSL systems
never heard about problems. Europeans claim that only shielded cables are
the safe way to transport the data. What's right and what's wrong? This talk
may give answers to these questions. First some EMC fundamentals with
respect to LANs will be presented. The goal is to use some simple equations
to understand and avoid EMC problems. Then, the EMC effects of typical
manufacturing mishaps such as improper installation or mechanical damage
will be discussed. Last, but not least, the EMC properties of modern LANs
will be presented.
*Speaker Bio:*
Dr. Heyno Garbe is a *Distinguished Lecturer* of the IEEE-EMC Society. He
received his Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from
the University of the Federal Armed Forces, Hamburg, Germany, in 1978 and
1986, respectively. Currently, he is a Professor at the University of
Hannover, Germany. He joined Asea Brown Boveri Research Center,
Switzerlandin 1986. There he was involved in research activities on
TEM-waveguides, the
numerical calculation of electromagnetic fields, and other EMC related
topics. Since 1992, he has been with the University of Hannover where he
holds a professorship in the faculty of electrical engineering and computer
science. He has developed an active research program related to
electromagnetic field effect modeling, testing, and measurement as applied
to EMC. Prof. Garbe is also very active in several EMC related national and
international standardization committees. He has authored and coauthored
more than a hundred articles in books, journals, and conferences.
