[SI-LIST] Re: IEEE EMC talk Oct 9 in Santa Clara

Well, he does say the four *most* confusing principles, implying there
are more.
I feel a discussion comin' on. What would people here tell the IEEE EMC
gang in Santa Clara are the four *most* confusing principles in SI?

I would think this would be relative to who is being confused - are we
talking old SI hands, or newbies just getting their feet wet?
Off the top of my head, for folks from outside the field, my suggestions
would be:

characteristic impedance
   - this took a lecture by Lee Ritchey, speaking slowly in one-or-two
syllable words, for me to get
Return paths, and impedance control
   - I'm frequently looking at issues around these, explaining and
correcting them
Simulations do not necessarily reflect reality
   - we know that around here, but somehow people seem willing to accept
simulations over real, carefully obtained traces.
Mounting inductance of passive components, inc decoupling caps and DC blocks
   - when talking about this and I don't have paper to draw on, I always
end up using my hands a lot more.
Ground is not always ground

Within the field we have much more subtle things to confuse us. :-P
