From some time ago when I worked with teleprinters I recall the ITA5 =
(International Telegraph Alphabet number 5). As I understand it (what I =
can remember) each of the letters of the alphabet plus a few symbols =
such as on a typewriter all have their own code. The code is a binary =
one. One of the codes is reserved for a shift to upper case or symbols =
which then allows you to double up and use the same codes twice. If I =
remember correctly an E is 10001. Other letters and numbers would have =
other codes from the possible 2^5 available. If you look on the internet =
I am sure the code will be their. I think it was once called =
murray-code.
