[SI-LIST] Re: Fwd: Re: About the chassis gnd and logic gnd

Steve,
I fully agree with you about the promise of X2Y capacitors to reduce
noise problems. I discuss X2Y capacitors on pages 8-30, 35-6, and 35-8
of Robust Electronic Design Reference Book, mainly with regard to their
use as filters.

I first tested X2Y capacitors nearly four years ago. At that time X2Y
was concentrating on their use as filters for DC motors and in fuses for
explosives. In the last year David J. Anthony (see references 218A
through 218L in http://www.dbicorporation.com/pwr-bib.htm) and James P.
Muccioli (see references 587 to 590A, ditto) have done a lot of
characterization, and published a number of papers and application
notes, on using X2Y capacitors on printed circuit boards. But if you go
out to the X2Y web site at http://www.x2y.com/ , you will notice
that many of these application notes are dated December 3, 2003 or
later. And I shipped off the final manuscript for "Robust" on December
4th. So this is one area that I *must* update if/when we do a 2nd
edition of my book.

Almost all of these papers and articles point out the extreme importance
of proper printed circuit board design to get good performance out X2Y
capacitors. And this again points out the importance of looking ahead,
early in design, to design them in.

The advantage of ferrite sleeves and ferrite toroids is that we can use
them no matter what kind of a mess a person has made of their printed
circuit boards...
