Hi Richard,

I basically agree with Ray Anderson's opinion about PCB power
distribution analysis tools . There is some info to add:

1. The Sigrity tool Power SI (PSI) can calculate the PCB AC and DC IR-drops.

2. It is the only tool which can calculate the DC drop for multiple
power planes, e.g. if there are several Gnd1 planes etc.

3. As there are interfaces to DSN, Mentor, Cadence, Zuken, Pads and
Protel, you can calculate the AC /DC drops for all PCBs, designed with
these CAD systems.

4. It is not known to me that Ansoft has a tool, which can determine the
DC drops of complex e.g. 32 layer PCBs with multiple power planes of
e.g. the same potential, probably not even for single power distribution
PCB plane pairs with their cutouts etc.

E. Miersch

PS: Original question to SI-List : I am in the process of searching for
power distribution tools that are easy and reasonably proced. Any body
knows about these tools.
