IMHO, put the drive transformer at the IC pins (assumes current mode
drive) but always put the CMC at the connector. Some vendors offer the
xfmr and CMC in a single package, best used by placing the IC next to the
magnetics next to the connector. Beyond those considerations, there is
no distance limit per se, just the usual management of loss and other
signal integrity phenomena.
