This response is not totally correct. There are lots of differences
between different SPICE programs. The most obvious are various versions
of controlled sources. Although the capability in many SPICE programs
is the same, the syntax can be quite different. Arbritrary sources can
also be quite different in syntax. Even the syntax of the
passive component such as IC resistors, mutual
inductance coeficient and non-linear capacitance can be quite different.
While the language is generic the syntax and some capabilities are not.
Craig is correct that Hspice has some proprietary transistor level
models.
Over the years this has distinquished Hspice from other flavors. The
W element although widely used is not something that other SPICE vendors
do not have. On the contrary, although not called W element there are
coupled lossy transimission line models in other SPICE programs.
Some are rather good and developed long before the now famous W element.
I do agree that the language of SPICE is generic and many algorithms
used
are the same or nearly so. Most SPICE programs are taylored for specific
applications. Price is also a huge factor when making a choice.
