All,
Though it is obvious from context, there is scope to mistake me. So, this
quick clarification.
By "I would encourage posting replies on the list" in last paragraph, I did
not mean posting others' private replies to you :-) It is posting replies on
the list vs. responding privately.
Thank you, Doug and William, for your quick and thoughtful responses.

Subject: [SI-LIST] Answering Protocol
Season's Greetings,
Here is a situation. Suppose I ask another list member, John Doe*, a
question (by posting it on the list) assuming the answer would be of
interest to some other members as well. If I get the reply from John
addressed only to me and there is need for further discussion, I am faced
with this dilemma: Should I forward it to the list to continue discussion
on-line? or, should I keep the discussion off-line? Either way, there are
issues...ethical and others.
Why John chose to go off-line? John was not entirely sure what he/she was
talking about or the reply possibly raises even more concerns or some other
things one can think of. Simple cases such as John (correctly) assumed the
reply was not of general interest or John was given a choice to reply
off-line are precluded.
What would you do in such situations? I believe the primary purpose of any
forum is to bring out better ideas; who-talked-what is secondary (I know
this is primary door way for egos, images etc.). If that definition works, I
would encourage posting replies on the list. Those replies come with
self-imposed moderation as bonus!
* Is he on this list? ;-)
Regards,
Sainath
