In every case, a personal Email is a personal Email, IMHO.
So, unless one gets permission from 'John', the off-line email he sent
you should stay off the si-list.
Also, the thought that someone would take the time to try to help
someone else out, 'off-line', seems to me to be at least 'eligible' for
such a polite courtesy, irregardless of its accuracy.
